5 ITEMS ON YOUR GROCERY LIST THAT CAN DOUBLE AS SKINCARE PRODUCTS

CUCUMBER

Rich in antioxidants, ascorbic acid and silica which rejuvenates the skin. It can also safely aid in the reduction of dark circles under your eyes, in addition to being a quick fix for eye bags.

Application : With both eyes closed, place a slice each on either eye and leave them on there for about 20 minutes.

PAPAYA

With an abundance of antioxidants such as vitamin C, flavonoids and carotene; it’s no surprise papaya’s pulp is a basic ingredient in a good number of skincare products on the market today.

Application: Mash fresh papaya into a fine paste, apply to face and leave on for 25-30 minutes to gradually fade old acne scars, dark spots and even out skin tone. This formula can also be used to treat sore and cracked heels! As if that isn’t enough, papaya also contains Alpha-Hydroxy Acid (AHA), which is a potent anti-aging agent.  Rub the peel of the papaya all over your face, leave for 5 minutes and rinse off.

CARROTS

Bursting with vitamin A, antioxidants and various minerals, this orange goodness is fast becoming a favorite in the beauty industry.  Apply pulp to your skin to gradually and safely get rid of blemishes and old acne scars. It also has anti-inflammatory and healing properties.

Application: Apply grated or raw carrots to household cuts, wounds and inflammations to help revive the skin.

LEMONS

Rich in vitamin c and ascorbic acid, lemon has a variety of skincare benefits. It can be used to brighten skin, fade acne scars and age spots as well as eliminate blackheads.

Application: Just apply some lemon juice (either directly or by making use of a cotton pad) onto skin, leave for 10-15 minutes (depending on the sensitivity of your skin), and then rinse off. Rub elbow and knees with a half cut of lemon to lighten them. Apply lemon juice on lips prior to going to bed and wash off in the morning to reveal clean exfoliated lips.

N.B: always wear SPF when using lemon treatments on your skin. If you have very sensitive skin, it’s probably best to avoid using lemon on your skin.

HONEY

Honey is special for its ability to absorb and retain moisture hence it aids in keeping the skin well hydrated and giving you that glow!  Honey is also a decent clarifying cleanser, as it tends to absorb junk and gunk from the pores. Its anti-bacterial properties makes it a suitable natural remedy for acne and its prevention.

Application: In a circular motion, apply a thin layer of honey onto semi-damp skin, leave on for a minimum of 30 minutes and rinse off with warm water.
