Bread is one the food items that has arguably reached universal status. Upon arriving a strange place with foreign food items, bread is almost always been the constant savior, the adaptation aid. It’s interesting then that very few people know anything about its transition through the ages.

Today at Nkataa, we shall bring to you, interesting facts about bread that you probably haven’t heard before.

  • Scandinavian traditions say that if a male and female eat from the same loaf, they are bound to fall in love. (Doesn’t that just make you want to share a loaf with that special crush?)
  • The ancient Greeks were already producing more than 80 types of bread in 2500BC. Talk about bread being around for ages.
  • Bread was so important to the Egyptians that they used it as a type of currency. Also, they had so much value placed on it that they often placed it on the tombs of their dead.

  • Otto Rohwedder is credited with inventing sliced bread in 1928. However, his real innovation was the oiled paper it was wrapped in to keep it fresh.
  • When sliced bread was first sold, it was advertised as “the greatest forward step in the baking industry since bread was wrapped”, thus leading to the popular phrase, “the best thing since sliced bread”
  • One bread superstition is that if you put a piece of bread in a baby’s cradle, it will keep away disease.
  • Legend has it that whoever eats the last piece of bread has to kiss the cook.
  • The sandwich (made with bread) is named for the Fourth Earl of Sandwich, for whom sandwiches were made so that he could stay at the gambling table without interruptions for meals.
  • In 1912, Austentite Newburg baked the world’s biggest loaf of bread: 162 pounds heavy, 10 feet long and 18 inches wide by 18 inches high. The loaf took an hour to bake and could supply 162 families for a day or one family for 162 days.(one word-WOW)
  • Breaking bread is a universal sign of peace.
  • The pocket in pita bread is made by steam. The steam puffs up the dough and as the bread cools and flattens, a pocket is made.
  • Murphy’s Law dictates that buttered bread will always land buttered –side down (feel free to experiment this).
